The Gros Morne Theatre Festival

The Gros Morne theatre festival is a major Canadian theatre festival based in Cow Head, in Gros Morne National Park. The Festival offers a full professional 16 week summer repertory season that includes 6 to 8 plays along with a visiting artist series and a workshop development week. The Festival employs up to 35 individuals including technicians, designers, directors and box office staff. There are two performances nightly (6 days per week) in two 92 seat venues. In the lead-up to the summer program, set design, costuming, and rehearsals all take place in Cow Head. Planning and logistical preparation for a fall touring schedule, that typically involves ten to twelve rural venues, also takes place.

Touring continues to be an integral part of our season – from Tempting Providence by Robert Chafe to Sarah McDonald’s With Cruel Times In Between and The Known Soldier by Jeff Pitcher – our plays tour regionally, provincially, nationally and internationally. We have performed at Atlantic Scene Festival in Ottawa, the On the Waterfront Festival in Halifax, Magnetic North in Edmonton, Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, Ten Days on the Island Festival in Tasmania, The Push International Festival in Vancouver, and the California International Theatre Festival. We recently completed a 69 rural community tour of Newfoundland and Labrador with Tempting Providence and are currently planning a major British and Atlantic Canadian tour of With Cruel Times in Between.

Sara...H McDonald Youth Theatre

Our Sara...H McDonald Youth Theatre, is a training ground for students between the ages of 6 and 18 dedicated to the promotion of the arts in young people. We have a solid reputation for producing skilled and professionally-minded young actors and technicians. Our program enables students to develop the focus, confidence, and communication skills that can impact every aspect of their lives. Students also perform publicly through the year for community events as well as our year end Festival of Youth.

Stage Head Academy

Designed for students aged 16-18 years who may be considering a career in theatre, Stage Head Academy is a two week theatre intensive program offered between the communities of Corner Brook and Cow Head. Students take workshops and classes in both the acting and technical production and in evenings rehearse their own production to be presented at the end of the program. In Cow Head students take workshops from company members of the Gros Morne Theatre Festival in the mornings, rehearse in the afternoons, and see everything the GMTF has to offer in the evenings. The program wraps with the students presenting their own production at the Gros Morne Theatre Festival.
